What's the Story?
Jake (voiced by Colin Ford) and his shipmates face a challenge like no other in JAKE AND THE NEVER LAND PIRATES: JAKE SAVES BUCKY. When Captain Hook (Corey Burton) finds a copy of the Pirate Code that mandates a winner-takes-all race between Bucky and the Jolly Roger, Jake and his friends are confident that their beloved boat has what it takes to win. Unfortunately, Hook has some dirty tricks up his sleeve that help him take first place and claim Bucky as his own. Desperate to get their ship back, Jake, Izzy (Madison Pettis), and Cubby (Jonathan Morgan Heit) enlist the aid of Peter Pan (Adam Wylie), who discovers a loophole in the code that might help them. But can the crew travel through Never Land and take on a fire-breathing dragon in time to save their favorite ship?
Is It Any Good?
Filled with high adventure and a valiant quest to save a friend, Jake Saves Bucky is an hour of swashbuckling fun that's beautifully suited to preschoolers. The characters invite viewers to be part of the action by speaking directly to them and engaging them in the story's progress, by which kids use basic reasoning and counting skills. They're treated to delightful music, wonderful examples of friendship and teamwork, and a great lesson in the rewards of determination.
If your tots are particularly sensitive, they may need an extra snuggle during the sad scene that shows Jake and his friends bidding farewell to Bucky. Kids will sympathize with the characters' emotions over losing their friendly ship, and you can use this aspect of the story to talk with yours about loss. Of course this somber mood doesn't last long, and as the story progresses, viewers will learn along with the characters that fairness and hard work are the most important tools in winning every kind of race.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about feeling sad. Can you think of a time when you felt sad about losing something? How did you handle your emotions? What makes you feel better in times like this?
Kids: What does it mean to cheat? How does Captain Hook cheat to win the race? How does his cheating wind up costing him the race?
Which of the characters in the show would you call a hero? What is it about him or her that you admire? Who are some of your personal heroes?
