What's the Story?
In what is depicted in 1995 as the future in 2021, powerful corporations run the chaotic and dystopian world of JOHNNY MNEMONIC. They control dissemination of information and communication among downtrodden citizens. Gun-toting members of the Yakuza (Japanese organized crime) provide a major pharmaceutical company's stop-at-nothing enforcement, killing dissidents without hesitation. The company seemingly does nothing to find a cure for a pandemic ravaging the population. Amid this bedlam, an organized rebellion is breaking the law by dispensing data by way of well-paid couriers. The job is risky, as overloading too many gigabytes can kill the courier. Johnny (Keanu Reeves) loads up in Beijing for a delivery to parties in Newark, and evil and murderous baddies try to thwart the download. Every minute of delay increases the risk of Johnny's demise.
Is It Any Good?
As with many other apocalyptic movies, and Blade Runner comes to mind, grim is the best way to describe the plot, art direction, and mood of Johnny Mnemonic. The 2021 that was imagined by the filmmakers working on this 1995 release is visualized as a dark, authoritarian, dusty, broken-down, tech-dominated future filled with political unrest, chases, explosions, stabbings, and shootings. In many ways this feels like a run-up to the better, more well-thought-out 1999 Keanu Reeves vehicle The Matrix.
For cardboard evil characters and one-dimensional resistance fighters, this can't be matched. Violence is played to some degree for campiness, as when a murderer called the Street Preacher (Dolph Lundgren) evokes the name of Jesus while killing, eventually going up in flames, as if an evil martyr.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the way the movie depicts Johnny as both heroic and selfish. Do you think his experience changes him for the better?
How does Johnny Mnemonic compare to other sci-fi works about the breakdown of society?
Chase scenes and creative methods of murder are on display here. Does violence help underscore the battle between haves and have-nots depicted here? Why, or why not?
