What's the Story?

Based on real events in Poland, JUSTICE is the story of a bank robbery gone horribly wrong and the police investigation afterward. Three young friends, each with their own desperate need for cash, plan a bank heist. But things don't go according to plan, and they're driven to kill the bank workers to cover their tracks. There's a lot of pressure from the government to solve the case quickly because of the way the Polish banking system is about to become privatized. So the higher-ups bring in disgraced veteran investigator Tadeusz Gadacz (Olaf Lubaszenko), promising to restore his career if he can wrap up the case in just two weeks. Assisting Gadacz is the up-and-coming Aleksandra Janicka (Wiktoria Gorodecka), whose boss has asked her to report on all of Gadacz's activities. Gadacz is a talented investigator and quickly finds the perpetrators. But can he find more than circumstantial evidence to bring the perps to justice?

Fans of police procedurals will find a lot of meat and potatoes to chew on with this gritty, compelling Polish crime drama. In Justice, the story itself keeps the tension and suspense building, but there are a few holes in the plot, and a couple of storylines are dropped. There are a lot of familiar elements that fans will find comforting, like the grizzled veteran with a checkered past, the up-and-comer, higher-ups pulling strings, and a trio of criminals trying to hold together after a bank robbery gone horribly wrong. The acting is very strong across the board and elevates what might otherwise be a pretty ho-hum experience. And it's refreshing to see a professional relationship between the two investigators that stays that way—no hard-to-believe romantic relationship develops.

  • Families can talk about the violence in Justice. Is it too much? Is it gratuitous? Does seeing it in movies and videos have a different effect on you than reading about it, or playing violent video games?

  • What about the strong language? Is it realistic? Does it matter?

  • How do teamwork and perseverance help Gadacz and Janicka solve the case?
