Katseye: Wild Hearts
What's the Story?
KATSEYE: WILD HEARTS explores the band's—Sophia, Daniela, Lara, Megan, Yoon-chae, and Manon (who was on hiatus during filming)—journey from formation on 2023 TV competition The Debut: Dream Academy, through growing global fame, to their 2026 EP, Wild.
Is It Any Good?
There's no denying the glossiness of this documentary about a global girl band created through a TV competition. But part of the band's success is in following the tried-and-tested formulas that repeatedly lead to music stardom—formulas that Katseye: Wild Hearts traces from the early days through to their 2026 EP, Wild. At the core, the members are likable, spirited, and portray a strong friendship behind the scenes. They talk about becoming more popular when they started being themselves online, and they encourage hard work and teamwork alongside what they brand their "chaos." The band members themselves don't seem particularly involved in the creative process, awaiting the songs that are written for them and the assigned choreography and fashion choices. Much of the creative input seems to come from their choreographers and stylists, who are given more screen time than usual here. The other focus is their fans—the Eyekons—who they repeatedly acknowledge for their part in the band's success.
So far, so enjoyable, and younger fans in particular will no doubt love hearing more from their favorites behind the scenes. But there's something that doesn't quite gel between the young women talking about mental health struggles and seeming to support each other, and the fact that two of the six members were on hiatus by the time much of the movie's promotion came around—both citing the need to step away to focus on their well-being. Just like the overall persona of the group, it can be difficult to pick apart what's authentic and what's not. That said, the members come across as fun, kind, at times humble and at others fiercely determined, and there's a dynamic energy to the film that will no doubt leave viewers singing their favorite tunes as the credits roll.
