What's the Story?

In KILLER WHALE, Maddie (Virginia Gardner) is a promising cellist who is working her day-job shift at a diner. Her boyfriend, Chad (Isaac Crawley), shows up with a gift for her, but an armed robber interrupts the moment, leaving Chad dead and Maddie with permanent hearing loss. A year later, a grieving Maddie uses hearing aids and has given up her cello. Her best friend, Trish (Mel Jarnson), arrives, announcing that she has booked the two of them a trip to Thailand. While partying, they meet expat Josh (Mitchell Hope), who takes them for a jet ski ride to a remote lagoon. Unfortunately, an orca named Ceto has escaped from a nearby theme park and is out for blood. With Josh killed and the jet ski sunk, Maddie and Trish find themselves marooned on a small rock, hunted by the whale, and with no hope of rescue.

After a slew of awful shark movies, this bloody B movie tries to mix things up by using a whale; unfortunately, it doesn't make much difference. An early scene in Killer Whale, a melodramatic display of senseless tragedy, doesn't quite fit into what should be a fun ride. It starts things off with a bit of a bummer, and things don't improve from there. The bulk of the movie is centered on the two women being trapped on a rock (an all-too-similar setup to The Shallows), and their thinly drawn characters aren't enough to keep us interested.

But the most egregious thing of all is the whale itself. The movie even explains this: Whales don't kill in the wild (humans aren't generally considered prey), but they do kill in captivity. So why is this one hunting humans in the wild? It thinks it's still in captivity. What the movie doesn't tell viewers is that whales are among the most intelligent species on Earth, and it's unlikely that one would confuse being in the wild and being in captivity. In short, there's not much to recommend here. Not even the orca attacks (with fake-looking CGI blood) are enough to make Killer Whale worth a fin.
