What's the Story?

In LET'S LOVE, director Andrea (Malin Akerman), screenwriter Nigel (Martin Freeman), and actors Jackson (Josh Hutcherson) and Jess (Jess Weixler) reunite for the 10th anniversary of their hit film. They're promised a huge, sold-out convention in Wales that will reconnect them with fans and boost their struggling careers. But when they arrive, an organizational error means there's no convention, and only a couple of die-hard fans. Determined to make the most of a bad situation, they decide to band together to develop a sequel to pitch to the studio by the following week—each trying to develop a storyline that resonates with their lives. But unresolved conflicts and unacknowledged crushes soon surface to cause chaos.

Filmmaker Jamie Adams' unique way of working creates a more realistic, raw tone than many romcoms, but this still doesn't quite stand out from the crowd. In Let's Love, Adams created the story, but allowed his actors to completely improvise the script. There's an almost documentary-like feel at some points as a result, and it certainly works on a meta level, with a group of actors improvising their lines as their characters attempt to develop the outline of a movie within the movie. But, at the core, the film still follows all the obvious clichés, even if it's done in a self-aware way. The cast is strong, and they all do a good job with the freedom they're given—Freeman particularly stands out here. There are also some funny moments. But ultimately it's a pleasant, easy watch, rather than anything more memorable.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about the central theme of a group of people reuniting to celebrate their heyday in Let's Love. What did each character come hoping for from the weekend? How did that reflect what they might have needed in their lives? Did they learn anything while they were there? Did anything change that might have affected their futures?

  • How does the movie connect its plot to the plot the characters are developing for their screenplay? How does it use the clichés of the romcom genre to build the story?

  • Discuss the strong language used. What does it contribute to the movie? Is a certain kind of language expected in a film like this?

  • How are sex and relationships portrayed in the movie? Is it affectionate? Respectful? Parents, talk to your teens about your own values regarding sex and relationships.
