Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
In LOLA, a young woman (Nicola Peltz Beckham) tries to make ends meet by working at a drug store and a strip club. Her life is turned upside down after two tragedies strike, leading her to try new ways of regaining her sense of self and her humanity.
Is It Any Good?
This film by Nicola Peltz Beckham is an exercise in everything a filmmaker should not do when making a movie. Filled with clichés, stereotypical characters, and a plot that defies logic, Lola is a preposterous melodrama that fails to elicit any sympathy for characters that are truly living through hell. Directed with callousness rather than earnestness, the film plays out like a parody. Its only saving grace is a good performance by the always reliable Virginia Madsen, who plays a villainous mother and indulges in the camp of it all, rather than playing it straight. Lola also makes use of elements that might trigger viewers, without any justification.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about all the tragedies that occur in Lola's life. How does she handle them? Is all the adversity believable?
Does the film use sexual violence, drug use, and homophobic slurs gratuitously or in a way that makes sense? Why?
Do you think characters of color are depicted in realistic ways, or do they serve the purpose of being sidekicks to the lead character? Why?
