Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
Li-Mei (Yu-Wei Shao) is a successful news anchor who becomes suspicious of her father's (Tien-Chu Lee) new girlfriend (Lin Mei-hsiu), who might just be a mysterious serial killer. She joins forces with a prosecutor (Rhyian Vaughan) to unmask her before it's too late, becoming entangled in a dangerous game where appearances are always deceiving.
Is It Any Good?
This Taiwanese drama is worth a look. In just under two hours, director Hsin Yin Sung packs social commentary on misogyny, serial killer genre thrills, and dark comedy into a wickedly delightful package that shimmers like the most enticing soap opera. Everything in Lost in Perfection is played for an extra dramatic effect, and surprisingly it never veers into camp territory. Even the strangest characters are modulated to seem like humans and never caricatures.
Based on a real-life case, the film makes for great food for thought, while never failing to entertain. Its wittiest moments come when it flips the table on us in unexpected ways, making us reevaluate the virtues we link to superficial traits.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the nickname the press gives the suspected serial killer. What does it say about the way the world sees women?
Do you think Li-Mei is a good journalist if she uses corrupt means to achieve her goals? What decisions would you have made differently?
How does Chih-te show integrity and compassion when no one else seems to?
