What's the Story?

In LOVE UNTANGLED, Se-ri (Shin Eun-soo) struggles with her naturally curly hair. Nothing she does to straighten it seems to work, so she has little hope that her crush will be interested. But when a transfer student shows up to challenge her views, she must look inside to figure what she really wants.

Is It Any Good?

Our review:

This straightforward, innocent romantic comedy is for younger teens and tweens. Certainly long at two hours, Love Untangled has enough heart and goodwill to justify watching to the end. The main character of Se-ri might be hit or miss for some, but her character is drawn round enough and is played with such gusto by Shin Eun-soo that her main character status feels justified. (Part of the film even pokes fun at this suspension of disbelief factor often necessary for romantic comedies.) Still, more savvy and experienced viewers might be a little bored by the highly predictable and generic structure of this film, even if the performances and playful comedy are meant to counterbalance or offset adhering to such normative genre conventions.

Some aspects of this movie seem odd (like the sudden late turn toward the very serious), but the charm, heart, and cuteness factors here are all much more universal. Parts of this film might resonate with older kids, and the main actors turn in strong (and at times emotional) performances.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about domestic violence and abuse in movies. How does Love Untangled represent and portray domestic violence? Why do you think the movie shows the father as a doctor?

  • Can you relate to Se-ri? Why or why not?

  • What does Yun-seok like about Se-ri?

  • How does Se-ri show curiosity and empathy? What scenes show her experiencing these character strengths? Likewise, how does Yun-seok show gratitude and integrity?

  • Would you be interested in a sequel or spin-off? What would a continuation of this story in college look like, for example?
