What's the Story?

Jay (Victor Belmondo) and Chiara (Simona Tabasco) are two accomplished young burglars who get hired to do a job together at the start of MASTERPLAN. It turns out the man who hired them, who goes by Roger (Stanley Tucci), has an ulterior motive for hand-picking the two of them. Together, the three will attempt to rob one of the world's most valued paintings from the Louvre Museum in Paris. The heist will change their lives, in more ways than one.

The pseudo-family connections forged by the starring threesome saves what otherwise feels like a compilation of every heist movie you've seen before. It's not a good sign when the detailed planning and high-stakes performance of a high-end heist comes off as a little dull, as in Masterplan. The craftsmanship of the film is slick, the locations striking, and the acting skillful, so the only explanation is that it's already essentially been done before.

Having said that, a sequence involving a balloon over Paris is pretty cool, and the finale's schtick pitting French and Italian police against each other gets a laugh. What does work well here is the chemistry of the oddball threesome—the smart-talking French and Italian youngsters and the mysterious father figure. They grow on you, giving you a reason to stay until the end.
