What's the Story?

In MIA AND ME: THE HERO OF CENTOPIA, Mia is spending time with her grandfather at his lakeside home when she is summoned by a magical gemstone in her bracelet to the world of Centopia. Here, Mia (Margot Nuccetelli) is pulled into an ancient prophecy about a hero that will save the colorful realm from maniacal villain, Toxor (Gedeon Burkhard). But will she find the power and confidence to play her part?

Is It Any Good?

The candy-colored video-game style graphics and reliably predictable story will likely appeal to younger kids here. But Mia and Me: The Hero of Centopia's lack of personality or much in the way of uniqueness means it's unlikely to play well with pre-teen audiences used to more clever and complex fare. There are some overly sickly sweet moments, such as Mia and her grandfather (Dave Willetts) singing together in the car and a cleaning montage that might make older kids cringe. Once Mia arrives in Centopia things improve, and there are moments of peril and excitement, as well as great messages, even if they're somewhat shoved down the throat. There's everything you'd expect from a modern animated adventure -- mysterious prophecy, hero finding their way in the world, villain with a backstory, a cute creature sidekick and, of course, dance offs, making the film entertaining even if it's never elevated above the basics.
