What's the Story?

MIDWINTER BREAK, based on Bernard MacLaverty's same-named 2017 novel, follows long-married couple Stella (Lesley Manville) and Gerry (Ciarán Hinds). Originally from Northern Ireland, they relocated to Glasgow after surviving a tragedy and raised a son who now lives abroad with his own family. Seemingly on a whim, Stella books a four-day trip to Amsterdam as Gerry's Christmas present. But what's meant to be a romantic getaway soon reveals long-simmering tensions and carefully guarded secrets—including Gerry's struggles with alcohol and Stella's growing desire to embrace a more devout religious life. During their short but meaningful trip, the couple face an unexpected reckoning that forces them both to confront painful truths about their marriage and themselves.

This slow-paced page-to-screen adaptation succeeds thanks to nuanced performances from stars Manville and Hinds. Like the novel, the film is more invested in character study than plot, and filmmaker Polly Findlay's direction lingers on the quiet intimacies of a long marriage rather than, say, a suspenseful mystery about what exactly happened to the couple in Belfast. Despite hints in the trailer, this isn't a story about one of the main characters seeking redemption for a violent IRA past. The Troubles loom in the background, but primarily as the catalyst that forced Stella and Gerry to leave Northern Ireland and rebuild their lives in Glasgow.

The movie's more compelling story arc focuses on what Stella hopes for her future, and why. Still, the uneven pacing makes the 90-minute run time feel longer at times, as viewers wait for a fairly anticlimactic shoe to drop. Even with the eventual big reveal, this is ultimately a story about whether two people can find a way to grow together after years of quietly drifting apart. In lesser actors' hands, the material might feel overly earnest, but Manville and Hinds bring gravitas to every scene.
