What's the Story?

In MINTED director Nicholas Bruckman explores the meteoric rise and decline of the NFT (non-fungible token) phenomenon within the art world. The film offers an insider's perspective on how blockchain technology disrupted traditional art markets, creating a $40 billion digital art economy. Through interviews, it highlights pioneering artists like Beeple (who sold a collection of NFTs for a record $69 million) alongside emerging creators from the United States, Cuba, and Africa. Minted examines the social, ethical, and economic implications of NFTs, questioning the sustainability of this digital art revolution.

In this scarily prescient documentary about the rise and decline of NFTs in the art world, director Nicholas Bruckman achieves multiple goals. Through Minted, we get a crash course on what the NFT craze was all about, what it meant for the democratization of the art world, what it meant for artists across the world, and why its crash feels eerily timely. Forgoing complicated technical or philosophical language for anecdotes that connect at a visceral level, we learn how for artists like Kina Matahari, NFT represents an opportunity to protest a broken political system. How for Latashá, NFT provides a chance to control her art and create provocative work within an industry that requires specific beauty standards.

Younger viewers might be fascinated by the easy money connotations associated with NFT, but Bruckman consciously showcases how the artists in the film are all devoted to their craft. Parents need not worry this documentary will make their kids quit school and pursue a career creating content.
