What's the Story?

In MON LAFERTE, TE AMO, singer-songwriter Mon Laferte shares intimate stories about her life, growing up poor in Chile, being abused by her stepfather and mother, her relationship with an older man when she was a teenager, and how these events helped her shape her artistry. Recorded while she was in the middle of a world tour and expecting a child, the documentary grants us access into the mind of one of the most talented Chilean musicians working today.

You don't have to be a fan of Mon Laferte to fall in love with her and her work through this delicate, thoughtful documentary. As directed by Joanna Reposi Garibaldi and Camila Grandi, Mon Laferte, te amo has a dreamlike quality in which the singer shares her life story using her music, archival footage, and illustrations to look back at her past and come to terms with how it shaped her as a human being and an artist.

Forgoing the traditional documentary technique of having people talk about her work, the story is entirely told by Laferte, which gives the film a poetic touch, almost as if we were given access to her journal, where she shares her innermost fears and dreams. There is something beautiful about listening to her talk about how she always felt the need to impress others in order to be loved, only to realize her work was learning how to appreciate herself with all of her imperfections. The "te amo" in the title is Laferte learning how to love herself above all things.
