Nelma Kodama: The Queen of Dirty Money
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
Using archival footage and interviews, NELMA KODAMA: THE QUEEN OF DIRTY MONEY gives the notorious Brazilian dollar dealer the opportunity to tell her story. Sitting in her luxurious apartment, Kodama weaves a fascinating tale of how she went from being a simple girl from a small town to one of the most infamous criminals in recent Brazilian history.
Is It Any Good?
Banking on our society's current obsession with easy luxurious living regardless of acquirement methods, director João Wainer delivers a documentary that might excite fans of the Kardashian clan. In Nelma Kodama: The Queen of Dirty Money, we meet one of Brazil's most enchanting criminals, a woman who allegedly aided high-profile criminals, including politicians and money launderers, as she made herself rich dealing with "dirty money."
Watching the charismatic Kodama talk about her life, one gets a sense of pride in her accomplishments. Wainer does a fantastic job not romanticizing her life but also observing how limited opportunities can be for a woman in Brazil. Decked in pearls and dressed to the nines, Kodama is a queen imprisoned by her own ambition and an ankle monitor that reminds her she built a sparkling sand castle. Kids might not be interested in her story, but those who watch should be reminded that no amount of luxury is worth losing one's freedom.
