No Pressure
What's the Story?
NO PRESSURE is a Polish romantic comedy about returning to roots. Oliwia (Anna Szymanczyk) has left her farm upbringing and made it as a big-city chef. When she's summoned back to her village for a funeral, she learns the farm has debts. Torn between obligations, she tries to help, and cute scenes with goats, ducks, and a handsome horse ensue. She appreciates the local homegrown produce and a handsome neighbor who also threatens the family farm's financial viability.
Is It Any Good?
No Pressure is a weak, shallow comedy about the resistant big city girl who predictably learns to appreciate and return to the country life she deliberately escaped. There are no surprises. Every development -- romance, enjoying farm life -- is loudly signaled way before it galumphs into the next stodgy plot point. A man pretending to fix a woman's car sabotages it so she can't drive away. A woman drives her car into the mud and gets stuck, then slips in the mud, messing up her nice dress. Drunken moonshiners next door slobber their way through endless unfunny scenes. A scheming grandmother is unapologetic about her underhanded methods for drawing Oliwia back to the village. Yet she opposes the most foolproof way of getting her granddaughter to come back.
This is as warm, fuzzy, and poorly written as the average Hallmark-style Christmas-ploitation concoction. The only thing missing is snow.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the viciousness (even though played for comedy) of the trick a grandmother plays on her granddaughter as the story begins. What would you do if someone tricked you that way?
How well does this movie unfold its story? Do you think you know where the plot is heading early on? Is that a good thing or a bad thing?
What signal is the movie sending about male-female relations with jokes about a woman needing a man's help and wives being the bosses of their husbands?
