What's the Story?

In OH BELINDA, Dilara (Neslihan Atagul) is a successful, well-known stage actress. People recognize and admire her. She lives in a beautiful home with her handsome boyfriend, actor Serkan (Serkan Cayoglu), and enjoys friendships with her close circle of other theater types. She tries to get out of shooting a commercial for a popular shampoo brand, Belinda, in which she's set to play Handan, an ordinary housewife/bank teller who is shown in the commercial enjoying a relaxing shower with the fantastic shampoo being advertised. She's rude to the man who plays her husband, Necati (Necip Memili), and whines through the shoot until she shampoos her hair yet again and opens her eyes to find that the crew is gone, she has become Handan, and Necati is, in fact, her husband. No one from her previous life as Dilara recognizes her and she's forced to live with "her" husband and kids, cleaning the house, cooking dinner, and going to her job at the bank until she can figure out how to regain her old life. She auditions for a part with her old troupe. She discovers she's having an affair with her smarmy brother-in-law at the bank, and that she has embezzled money with him. She insists she isn't Handan until her husband has her sedated and institutionalized. An inmate tells her to play along if she wants to get out, so she uses her acting skills to gain freedom and plays the role of wife and mom until she can make an escape.

Oh Belinda is one, great big missed opportunity. Through the entire 97 minutes, unrelenting questions remain unanswered. What is this for? What point are the filmmakers trying to make? What will Dilara learn? Those questions linger as the plot become more and more convoluted and the characters' actions and motivations become more and more incomprehensible and irrational. Why is she happy when she finds hidden money? How will that solve her problems? We never learn the answer. How will getting a role in a play help her? No clue. Why is she so angry and unpleasant all the time, even before her nightmare transition occurs? A mysterious company is introduced. What does that mean? Someone does a dance on a roof in the rain. Why?

While the story is faulty, performances are all excellent. Atagul is a multi-talented, adept dramatic and comic actor. And Memili as her annoying husband is convincing as a man completely mystified by what's happened to his wife. Too bad nothing else here adds up.
