What's the Story?

Fresh out of military prison for resisting arrest and leading police on a fast-paced chase on his motorcycle, Wes (KJ Apa) decides to track down his father, whom he's never met, in ONE FAST MOVE. Wes knows that his dad, Dean (Eric Dane), is a professional motorcycle racer and might be able to help him get into the game. What he doesn't know is that his dad is way past his prime and wasting his days away working at a local bike shop for elderly friend Abel (Edward James Olmos) and drinking heavily every night. Wes' appearance and his natural talent will inspire Dean and Abel, but the relationship won't be easy. Likewise for Wes' newfound love interest, local waitress Camila (Maia Reficco).

This meditation on masculinity and what it means to be a man and a father is tense and well paced. That doesn't mean every scene in One Fast Move works. The portrayal of working-class toxic masculinity can feel clichéd, the sole female role is minimalized, and a climactic scene between the two main characters doesn't quite ring true. But the apology afterward does, and the movie is performed with a commendable sincerity, especially on the part of rising star Apa (Riverdale), who also executive-produced. Director Blatz makes some interesting choices of camera angles to capture the races as well as the more dramatic scenes, to mixed effect.
