What's the Story?
For the last few years, the United States has instituted a chastity mandate, banning premarital sex completely other than for ONE NIGHT ONLY each year. With no boyfriend in sight, jingle singer Allie (Monica Barbaro) heads to the requisite bars and clubs, hoping not to just meet someone who can meet her immediate needs, but someone with whom she might find a real connection. Meanwhile, Owen (Callum Turner)'s plans with his live-in-girlfriend (Maya Hawke) goes very, very wrong. On a night intended for satisfaction, will Allie and Owen experience pleasure or pain?
Is It Any Good?
A sex comedy where no one's having sex isn't unheard of, but in director Will Gluck's fresh take, literally everyone is having sex except for the main characters. The metaphor in One Night Only is relatable to most singles: It can feel like everyone around you is happily hooked up, and you're the only one floundering around alone. The concept also reflects the modern dating scene, in which technology has created an infinite amount of choice when it comes to meeting someone and yet it can feel like making a connection is harder than ever.
With fresh faces in the lead roles (including sweet, goofy charmer Turner) and supporting characters played by actors who are likely to draw smiles from younger generations (King Princess, Julia Fox), Millennials (Levar Burton), and Gen X (Molly Ringwald) alike, plus surprising cameos guaranteed to bring squeals from the seats, the casting alone practically guarantees a good time. Screenwriter Travis Braun (typically known for preschool fare) slides through jokes about the current climate while avoiding being political, and the result is that this outrageous premise may actually feel completely believable to all, including takeaways that could align with a variety of points of view on premarital sex. Like any romcom, you know where One Night Only is going to end, but this may be the least formulaic romcom that's still true to the formula.
