What's the Story?

Narrated by actor Josh Gad, ORANGUTAN follows a family of apes and is led by 9-year-old Indah, who is jealous now that her mom, Diann, is giving newborn brother Bimo all the attention. Indah is readying her departure from home to venture out on her own. Other apes and animals also make appearances, and each teaches viewers about some aspect of their individual species and life in the forest.

A subdued Josh Gad offers a charming narration to another beautiful and educational animal documentary from Disneynature. The setting and script of Orangutan convey the wonder of the forest and all its varied creatures. The film has humor (in assigning animals embarrassing human attributes), beauty (the forest, the rainbows), and a diversity of adorable monkeys. A whimsical soundtrack includes Van Morrison's "Days Like This" and "I Wan'na Be Like You," from the original Disney classic The Jungle Book.

  • Families can talk about what they learned about the stars of Orangutan. Where could you find more information about these close human relatives?

  • Where are Borneo and Sumatra? What else do you know about these places?

  • Disneynature documentaries often follow specific animals who are given names and stories. How do you think this helps human viewers relate to the animals?

  • This film took four years to film and then edit together more than 700 hours of footage. Does that surprise you? Where could you go to learn more about the process?
