What's the Story?

A family of four try to stay away from a zombie outbreak by returning to a family farm where they attempt to keep out undead invaders. Soon they realize past memories haunting the farm might be more terrifying than any zombie attack.

Is It Any Good?

Director Carlo Ledesma cleverly uses the zombie genre to deliver a story that has more to do with generational trauma than horror. But Outside takes too long to make its point, and by the time we learn where the director is headed, the amount of zombie limbs, guts, and decapitations we have seen might be too much for us to want to keep watching.

Fortunately the four lead actors are magnificent, with Beauty Gonzalez delivering a performance of quiet restraint that eventually breaks your heart. Sid Lucero goes from loving father to a character out of The Shining efficiently, but it's not his fault the screenplay doesn't ever justify the sudden shift in his character. Fans of gore and zombie flicks might be put off by the family drama aspects of the film, while those invested in the human tragedy might want to keep their eyes closed to avoid being splattered with zombie bits.
