What's the Story?

In PANDA PLAN 2, Jackie (Jackie Chan) and the panda Hu Hu are traveling to their next engagement when they stumble on a secret door leading to the home of an Indigenous society in the jungle. They're taken prisoner, until the chieftain (Ma Li) realizes that Hu Hu resembles their deity. According to a prophecy, Hu Hu must choose a "messenger" and climb to the top of a nearby summit, where they will save the tribe from an upcoming disaster. Hu Hu chooses Jackie, who's reluctant to take on the dangerous climb. While preparing for the mission, Jackie discovers that the tribe raises their children to be independent by the age of 6, and things like hugging and saying "mom" are strictly forbidden. He realizes that only by getting them to embrace cooperation and teamwork can the plan actually succeed.

The original movie made money, so naturally we get a sequel that, while half-baked, story-wise, has comic fighting and a sort-of-cute panda and is slightly less obnoxious than the first. That said, the first half of Panda Plan 2: The Magical Tribe is actually pretty bad. It starts with a needless prologue that foreshadows events to come, and the events that land Jackie and Hu Hu in the mysterious land make no sense. (Jackie's driver and assistant vanish into thin air for no reason.) There are broadly juvenile jokes, such as one character being repeatedly bashed over the head and getting amnesia (and also, problematically, acting in a "ladylike" manner that involves braiding his hair and wearing flowers), then returning to his normal "tough" self, then getting amnesia again, etc. Characters also accidentally eat "magic" mushrooms, and other characters drink to get drunk. Plus, there are musical numbers and dancing, and we can't help but wonder: Shouldn't Jackie get going on his mission, if he's going to save the village?

Then, as the movie gets to its second half, there are actually a couple of good laughs and a nicely positive message as Jackie helps the tribe understand concepts like hugging and encouragement and the fact that they all need to work together to conquer the summit. Panda Plan 2: The Magical Tribe is probably nobody's idea of a good movie, but it can be pleasant.
