The impressive cast creates a lively show in this funny but oddly light drama. Peter's Friends pulls together a group of old college friends that don't quite fit together anymore, plies them with alcohol, stirs up past tensions, sprinkles in some new secrets, and locks them in a country manor for the weekend. The setup provides a stage for its veteran actors to shine, with Fry giving an easy, warm performance in the central role, while Emma Thompson, Hugh Laurie, Kenneth Branagh, Imelda Staunton, Alphonsia Emmanual, and Rita Rudner all carve out powerful characters that add their own spark. There are funny moments, tender moments, and moments that don't quite gel. But the decades-long connection at the heart is tenderly played and anchors the surrounding chaos right through to the final scene.
