What's the Story?

In PROM DATES, best friends Jess (Antonia Gentry) and Hannah (Julia Lester) have always planned for prom to be the best night of their lives. But when Jess catches her smarmy boyfriend, Luca (Jordan Buhat), with another girl, and Hannah breaks it off with smothering beau Greg (Kenny Ridwan) -- because she can no longer deny that she's a lesbian -- prom plans look tenuous. Of course, Jess is also hiding her own secret -- that she slept with Hannah's brother, Jacob (JT Neal). The besties set out to parties at a nearby college to find new and improved dates, but things quickly spiral out of control.

Is It Any Good?

Our review:
Parents say ( 1 ):
Kids say ( 1 ):

At least a few laughs will be had with this film, but its entertaining lead actors deserved better than this superficially edgy teen escapade. Prom Dates lets its tone and intentions be known in the opening scenes, which are punctuated by a slew of swear words and sexual references. The main characters get into all manner of misadventures over the course of one night, from drinking and drugs to sexual exploits and green vomit, wannabe killers, and running from the police. It's all fun and games, but attempts to imbue the shenanigans with any deeper meaning fall short, as do many of the film's gags.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about whether Prom Dates is overly explicit or goes too far in its gross-out humor and language. Where's the line for you?

  • Why is prom so often used as such a pivotal moment in film and television scripts? Was it (or do you anticipate it to be) so in your own life?

  • What do Jess and Hannah learn about themselves over the course of the film? What do they learn about their relationship?
