What's the Story?

In QUASI, Quasi Modo (Steve Lemme) is in charge of the torture rack in the time of the odious King Guy (Jay Chandrasekhar) in medieval France. Quasi spends his time getting picked on for being a hunchback, but he still has the friendship of Duchamp (Kevin Heffernan) and even manages to catch the eye of Catherine (Adrianne Palicki), the new queen, who already suspects that Guy has ulterior motives for marrying her. Against this backdrop, the village is abuzz because the pope (Paul Soter) is about to visit, and a lottery is being held to determine who among the peasants will win the chance to have an audience with him. At the lottery drawing, Quasi has the winning ticket, and he is soon embroiled in a rivalry between the king and the pope in which each wants Quasi to kill the other. With the help of Catherine, Quasi must find a way to escape this situation and show the world that there's more to him than meets the eye.

This movie is not recommended. If you play in a band, there's a running joke in which you know that you played a bad show when the soundperson says to you afterward, "Well, it looks like you had a lot of fun up there." That's the same feeling one has while watching Quasi. It looks like those involved had a great time making this. Sadly, this enjoyment doesn't extend to the audience. It's impossible to express just how painfully unfunny this movie is.

Even if you're a fan of what Broken Lizard has done in the past, this is basically an exercise in stupidity. There's nothing wrong with "stupid" humor per se, but said humor does have to be, you know, funny. The closest this movie gets to even a chuckle concerns some obvious observations on selfies, but the rest of it is a seemingly endless tedium of stale jokes that fail to land. And you don't want to know about the "scrotum torture," as it fails to elicit laughter despite all the best efforts of the talented people behind this. A disappointment on every level.
