Soon after, a woman (Erin Doherty) claiming to be Clare arrives on their doorstep. But her arrival raises more questions than answers. Old wounds resurface and tensions escalate as John becomes convinced this stranger is not who she claims to be, while Mary desperately wants to believe their nightmare is finally over.

This mysterious British drama takes viewers to surprising places as a couple's daughter disappears, then reappears years later—raising unsettling questions about identity, truth, and trauma. Reawakening is written and directed by Virginia Gilbert in her second feature film, and she draws compelling performances from veterans Harris and Stevenson in emotionally complex roles. One scene in particular, when Clare first returns home, showcases Harris delivering a masterclass in restrained reaction. The film's provocative premise is handled with deliberate understatement—quiet-mannered in its depiction despite the harrowing narrative. This restraint may leave some viewers wanting more emotional intensity, but Gilbert's thoughtful approach and willingness to sit with ambiguity mark her as a filmmaker unafraid to tackle difficult questions about grief and family trauma.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about the different reactions from the two parents, to the return of their daughter in Reawakening. How did they differ? Why do you think they had such different reactions?

  • Most of the movie's violence was implied rather than shown. Did this make it feel less impactful? Why, or why not? Does exposure to violent media desensitize kids to violence?

  • Discuss the use of strong language in the movie. What did it contribute to the story? Is a certain level of language expected in a film like this? If so, why?
