What's the Story?

REGARDING US follows Veronica (Alexandra Grey), a deeply devout Catholic woman who works at a Catholic school, only to be unceremoniously fired after the board finds out that she's transgender. Faced with no job prospects and no family connections, Veronica feels that her only option is to kill herself. But suddenly she's thrust into the lives of struggling actor Denny (David Beck) and his daughter, Isabel (Andrea Rose Guzman), an inquisitive and empathetic child. Veronica's relationship with Denny and Isabel also brings her into contact with Isabel's other dad, Adrian (Eliud Garcia), and Isabel's new friend, Kyle (Hudson Paul), who's questioning his sexuality.

This is a sweet drama that offers glimmers of hope for anyone growing up amid too many people who have yet to learn how to truly accept others. Grey, Guzman, and Paul are standouts as Veronica, Isabel, and Kyle. Despite being different ages, all three are discovering what it's like to come of age (even as an adult, in Veronica's case). Veronica has a chance to rediscover her own power in the face of bigotry, and Isabel learns what it means to be someone who stands up for others, regardless of what anyone else thinks. And Kyle is on the path of learning who he is and what he wants to identify as, especially in the face of an unforgiving family.

Regarding Us makes the clear point that trans people are part of our communities, including our churches and schools, two places where some feel they shouldn't belong. By showing viewers that welcoming others, regardless of their differences, is more in line with Christ's teachings than ostracizing them, the movie gently teaches viewers that everyone deserves respect, care, understanding, and support.
