Relationship Goals
What's the Story?
Leah (Kelly Rowland) is entirely dedicated to her television producing career and expecting to get a big promotion when RELATIONSHIP GOALS begins. But boss Dan (Matt Walsh) drops a bomb when he tells her she has to compete for the top job against a man being brought in from outside. Turns out the man, Jarrett (Cliff ‘Method Man' Smith), is an ex-boyfriend. When the two are assigned to work on a Valentine's Day story together, sparks fly. The story will impact how Leah and her best friends, Brenda (Robin Thede) and Treese (Annie Gonzalez), all think about their future.
Is It Any Good?
Likeable characters, some well-timed humor, and an overall pleasant vibe make this romcom an agreeable watch. Relationship Goals is based on The New York Times-bestselling book of the same name by an Oklahoma pastor. When Leah calls out a show-within-the-film about the book as a "puff piece," we know what she means. The film gets bogged down in scenes at the church and with the pastor, where it feels like a paid promotion. It's too bad, because the actors on their own are quite fun, and their banter generally hits its mark.
