Revelations
What's the Story?
In REVELATIONS, a young pastor's (Ryu Jeon-yeol) life is shaken when he discovers his wife's affair, and a young detective's ethics are tested when she finds herself with a chance to avenge her sister's death.
Is It Any Good?
For viewers who stick around to the end, there's a rewarding conclusion to this moody thriller. It's not perfectly executed, but director Yeon Sang-ho maintains a steadily foreboding tone in Revelations, and the dark story is handled well. It might be easy to forget that this film could easily come across as either anti-religious or pro-, but thankfully Yeon safely navigates this potential pitfall by focusing on one singular man's path to insanity. The idea here is that, of course, not every "extreme believer" falls victim to the kind of "madness" advertised in this movie. But madness does still arrive, in various ways, to various people. Particular commendations go to Ryu Jeon-yeol (Min-chan) and Shin Hyeon-bin (Yeon-hee) for their performances, both of which push emotional boundaries.
Still, it isn't flawless. The long run time (over two hours) and weird pacing decisions keep the final product from being a greater experience than it could have been. For example, the first half nicely settles into a slow ramping of tension and stakes, but then the pacing inexplicably slows to a crawl, and backstory sequences occur while a tied-up little girl needs to be found. When the conclusion and "revelation" of the detective do happen, most audiences will have already pieced everything together. But there's some solid filmmaking here, and it's hard not to have some parts of this film continue to resonate after watching.
