What's the Story?

As with the original story, Rich in Love, RICH IN LOVE 2 returns to Teto (Danilo Mesquita), the spoiled son of a Brazilian tomato mogul. By the end of the earlier film, he seems to have given up his rich-kid ways by starting a cooperative that helps poor tomato growers manage and distribute their harvests. But at the start of this film, he is as self-absorbed as ever, trying to sabotage the career plans of dedicated physician Paula (Giovanna Lancellotti), his love interest. She's off to set up clinics for Indigenous people of the Amazon but he tries to pull strings to keep her from going. His co-op is jeopardized when his father, the tomato king, pulls his support. Teto frantically seeks another financial backer and connects with an old, wealthy friend of the family, Everaldo (Roney Villela), who seems eager to help, but is also shady. His generosity turns out to be linked to illegal gold mining, a process that contaminates the water of Indigenous communities living in the rainforest. To save his co-op, Teto must earn the trust of Indigenous people by living in the community and working with them side by side. In a secondary plot, a best friend and partner turns out to be a relative, complicating relationships and finances. Ultimately, Teto must prioritize helping others in order to outwit the bad guy, improve the lives of the Indigenous people whose trust he's won, and possibly win back Paula.

The trouble with a story about a spoiled rich kid is that the only satisfying arc is the one in which he learns to put others first. The first movie was supposed to be about that, but here we are watching Teto demonstrate his egotism once again. That means that Rich in Love 2 is built on the same dramatic evolution as the prior film, and why should we believe his redemption this time if his first transformation turns out to have been a lie? Why should his love interest, Paula? And why did she like him in the first place? Nothing about this is believable, including the premise that Paula and Teto will make a happy couple.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about how hard it is for the privileged main character here to become a more caring person. He often slips back to self-serving actions. Does that call his sincerity into question? Do you believe he can change?

  • How does the movie present Indigenous people of the Amazon? Is their culture treated respectfully?

  • Does the movie clearly explain the way the industry tries to exploit the Indigenous homeland? Do you think the way the people are treated is fair or right? Why or why not?
