What's the Story?

In RUFUS, Manny Garcia (Davis Cleveland) is struggling to fit into a new middle school after moving for his parents' jobs. He takes comfort in his loyal dog Rufus, and during a walk in the park they find a magic amulet that can turn his dog into a human. Boy Rufus (Jace Norman) has a lot to learn about appropriate human behavior, but he proves a hit at Manny's school, quickly becoming the most popular kid there. But their fun might be short-lived—shadowy figures are hot on their tails, determined to catch them and take back the amulet.

Plenty of silliness and chaos bounds out of the fun concept at the heart of this heartwarming family movie. As the title character in Rufus, Norman gives a larger-than-life performance that sees him chasing squirrels, catching frisbees, chewing shoes, and face-planting his food. Cleveland's Manny is equally likable as the friend who sticks alongside him, partly to revel in his popularity and partly to clean up his mess. The two have their friendship changed and tested, but ultimately both prove as loyal as each other, and their sweet bond is one of the best things here. Haley Tju as Paige is a great addition to the duo, barely batting an eyelid at Rufus's true identity, and quickly becoming a smart and caring ally. There are some slapstick moments when the kids take on the villains, and a great school dance number that adds to the fun. The ending becomes even more ridiculous than the initial concept, but there's a lot here to like, and some great messages for kids.

  • Families can talk about the theme of friendship in Rufus. How did Manny and Rufus's friendship change during the film? How was it challenged and what did they both learn? Why is friendship important?

  • Characters showed kindness, resourcefulness, and teamwork. How did these help them in the movie, and why are they great character traits to have?

  • If a magic amulet could turn your pet (or someone else's) into a human, would you want to meet their human self? What might be some things you'd need to explain to them about human behavior?
