What's the Story?
In RUN, a boat carrying undocumented migrants from Africa arrives at an Italian town. Some passengers are arrested while others flee. American tourist Anna (Amanda Plummer) tries to help a pregnant woman she finds, while tour operator Eddie (James Russo) and his friend Matt (Ulrich Thomsen) harbor murderous plans for those they feel are impacting their business. In the middle is a cop called Cappi (Daniel Sauli), who feels the pressure of the situation from all sides.
Is It Any Good?
Most of this thriller—directed by Uwe Boll—is a clumsy but fairly even-handed look at the asylum-seeker crisis. However, Run's facade drops in the final act, when angry White 50-somethings Eddie and Mark massacre a camp of undocumented immigrants. This extreme violence seems designed for a subset of viewers who've spent the film nodding along to gripes about bureaucracy and weak border policies. Their payoff is a miserable, drawn-out sequence of Black people and police being gunned down and blown up. It's a mean streak that reveals the film's dark desires, created to satisfy an extremist right-wing audience.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about what Run is trying to say about people-smuggling and asylum seekers. Do you think its portrayal is even-handed and fair, or does it seem to have an agenda? Who do you think the film is made for?
Talk about the film's violence. Was it shocking? Thrilling? Both? Does exposure to violent media desensitize kids to violence?
Discuss the strong language used in the movie. What did it contribute to the movie? Is a certain kind of language expected in a film like this?
Did you notice any stereotypes? How did they make you feel? Why are accurate depictions in the media important?
