What's the Story?

In SANCTUARY, when Hal (Christopher Abbott) -- the son of a hotel magnate who's about to fulfill his destiny as CEO -- ends his professional relationship with his dominatrix, Rebecca (Margaret Qualley), she refuses to leave. Insisting that he owes her his career, she starts playing a series of psychosexual mind games to try to wrest power, money, and control from him.

Is It Any Good?

Zachary Wigon's two-person power struggle/erotic thriller seems designed to get people talking. Which these two characters also do a lot of. With the entirety of Sanctuary taking place in a hotel room, other than occasional forays to the hall or elevator, this could easily be a play, and it does have the vibe of something off-off-Broadway, especially because it feels so New York (even if it's actually supposed to be set in Denver). Hal may be worth billions, but he's lacking self-worth. And Rebecca, well, she's full of surprises.

This is a character study revolving around an emotional, high-stakes game of succession and co-dependence. The ending is either outrageous or ambiguous, depending on how you take it, coming with the realization that the camera operator may be an unreliable narrator. It's not really a dinner-and-a-movie kind of flick, but it will give adults something to chew on. But it's definitely not for teens.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about how sex is depicted in Sanctuary. Is the relationship in the story a healthy one? Why, or why not? Does the fact that the characters' relationship is consensual make everything they do together OK?

  • What is an "unreliable narrator"? Is that a factor in this film? What do you think the final moment between the two characters means for the entire film?

  • What are productive and healthy ways to deal with pressure and self-doubt?

  • Did you notice any stereotypes in the film? Why are stereotypes often harmful?
