What's the Story?
SCARYGIRL is the story of Arkie (Jillian Nguyen), a 12-year-old girl with an eyepatch and a tentacle for an arm, who lives with her octopus father Blister (Rob Collins). When Blister is captured and taken away, Arkie knows that both his fate and the fate of the planet rests on her shoulders, as she plucks up the courage to go headfirst into the night, knowing that eventually a confrontation with the evil-minded Dr. Maybee (Sam Neill) could be on the cards.
Is It Any Good?
Such is the wide variety of positive messages that this animated adventures preaches, it's difficult to criticize it too much. Whether it be about the environment, about one's own body image and insecurities, to having a strong female lead, and being against the mindless killing of animals for sport, Scarygirl has its heart in the right place. But on the entertainment side, sadly it falls short. The film may have a lot to say, but the best messages find their way to the viewer when dressed up within a fun and engaging narrative, and this just feels a little too frenetic and convoluted at times.
