This landmark documentary takes us inside the world of Formula One motor racing during an era when it seemed as though the whole world was watching. Senna shows how the iconic Brazilian driver captured the imagination of millions with his skill and uncompromising approach, his legend only seeming to grow after his tragic death while competing at the age of 34. The film is comprised of archive interview and race footage of the man himself, as well as more intimate moments where he is shown relaxing with family and friends. Those who were close to him also provide their insights into what powered both his racing career and Senna as a person. The footage of his fatal crash is unsettling, but director Asif Kapadia (Amy, Diego Maradona) manages to cast an objective eye on the incident while also making room for the outpouring of grief that followed. It's a fine commemoration of a sporting hero who shows that being a fierce competitor and a humble, compassionate person don't have to be mutually exclusive.
