What's the Story?
German architect Mavi (Beritan Balci) and lawyer Can (Sinan Gulec) are very much in love and considering marriage at the start of SHE SAID MAYBE. Can surprises Mavi with a 10-day trip to Istanbul. There, she discovers she is the only heir to one of the wealthiest Turkish families. Her mother, Aynur (Ilknur Boyraz), and deceased father had kept this family a secret and hadn't even taught Mavi to speak Turkish. Grandmother and business matriarch Yadigar (Meral Perin) schemes to bring Mavi into the family fold, even if that means breaking up her and Can with a little help from Istanbul's most eligible bachelor, Kent (Serkan Cayoglu). Will Mavi stay to run the family business? Will she want Can by her side?
Is It Any Good?
This predictable romantic dramedy has enough by way of attractive settings and characters to maintain viewers' attention. But She Said Maybe plays like a telenovela, with overly melodramatic plot twists and awkward reactions meant to be funny. The characters and story feel less than fresh and can be forgotten quickly, leaving just the lovely locations lingering in your mind.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about what appeals to Mavi about her new proposed life in Istanbul in She Said Maybe. What other movies have a plot where someone discovers they are from a wealthy or royal family?
Why did Yadigar behave the way she did? In general, is it hard for you to empathize with characters who do things that hurt others?
The film is set between Hamburg, Germany and Istanbul, Turkey. One character tries to explain Turkish customs and gestures to another. What did you take away about these two cultures and places from this film? Where could you go for more information?
