What's the Story?
When Diamond (Sasha Luss), the daughter of a famous action film director, takes her friends on an impromptu trip to Phuket, Thailand, they imagine a wild weekend of sex, drugs, and hazy memories. But then a drug cartel kidnaps Daisy (Skai Jackson), and Diamond, Ryder (Wallis Day), and Ezra (Isabelle Fuhrman) must become SHEROES to rescue her -- by following action movie clichés, of course.
Is It Any Good?
In a world that's increasingly supporting female-forward films, director Jordan Gertner has created a female-backward movie. Stylistically sensational and boasting good music on the soundtrack, it has qualities that may draw teens in at the start. But the movie's depiction of female empowerment is superficial, and the young "sheroes" (cringe) are just THE WORST. Gertner clearly doesn't have a high opinion of young women, as the four main characters are a diva movie star (Fuhrman), the entitled daughter of a director (Luss, whose "acting" consists of sashaying and posing), a bored art gallery worker (Jackson), and a "skater girl" (Day). They all take their "fabulous" lives for granted and are just waiting for their next chance to get loaded or laid. They have zero depth, make terrible decisions, and are some of the most damaging examples of women to hit the screen since, well, maybe ever. For example, they "torture" a crime lord by giving him a sexy lap dance in bondage lingerie and then threaten to cut off his penis with an enormous pair of pruning shears. None of it makes any sense, including how this terrible script got the green light.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the authenticity, or lack therof, in the way young women are depicted in Sheroes. Do you think it's important that female writers and directors tell female stories? Why, or why not?
Are smoking, drinking, and substance abuse glamorized or normalized here? Are there realistic consequences? Why does that matter?
The characters set out to rescue their friend by following action movie clichés. What film references did you notice? Do you think any of these methods would actually work?
Discuss the way Diamond and Ezra use sex and their sexuality to manipulate men. Why are these depictions dangerous and damaging?
