What's the Story?
In January 2012, many on the luxury liner Concordia felt a clunk and rumbling as they cruised the Mediterranean. SHIPWRECKED: NIGHTMARE AT SEA shows the captain had irresponsibly sent the ship onto rocks near an Italian island. For the next 40 minutes he refused to alert the crew or passengers to the fact that the ship was fatally damaged, taking on water quickly and sinking. With no direction from the captain or crew regarding safety steps or lifeboats, passengers called the police. Even when the coast guard offered help, the captain refused it, dodged their questions regarding the cause of the crisis, and put off implementing safety actions. This led to further chaos. When the captain finally gave the abandon ship announcement, he got himself into a lifeboat and left crew and passengers to fend for themselves. The captain was ordered back onto the ship to coordinate the rescue but he refused. Many passengers and crew took it upon themselves to help others but chaos prevailed. Thirty-two died.
Is It Any Good?
This documentary does a great job using footage taken during the crisis and black box recordings to incite appropriate outrage over the ship captain's seeming negligence and incompetence. It also lays bare a shocking lack of emergency planning and a seeming total absence of automatic implementation of communication rules, and lack of training and protocols in place for crew disaster response. The film would be just as effective if it skipped early backstories of surviving passengers and crew members, since our interest in them is not why they went on a cruise but rather, in some cases, their heroic actions, resourcefulness, and dramatic routes to survival that matter to this narrative.
Eventually, the captain was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to years in prison, but the cruise ship company, which presumably sets safety protocols and training mandates, was fined minimally but was not otherwise held accountable for its negligence in any significant way. The filmmakers could've made more of that sad fact. The movie also might've mentioned that as a result of the incident, an international maritime organization later implemented 30 new safety rules to prevent future such disasters.
