What's the Story?
#SKYKING tells the unsettling true story of Richard "Beebo" Russell, a troubled airport worker who one day makes the reckless decision to hijack a commercial airplane, with tragic results.
Is It Any Good?
An unsettling flight from beginning to end, #SkyKing barrel rolls high in the drama while staying grounded in reality—ultimately landing an empathetic portrayal of a sensational story. Instead of portraying Russell as a good or bad person, this film shows the extreme consequences of mental health left unchecked. A normal guy with humor, kindness, faith, and the American dream can still make reckless, dangerous, and tragic decisions. Rather than trying to romanticize his infamy, this film paints the truer picture of a man in crisis, and the lasting consequences of his impulsive actions. The haunting audio recordings with real-time reactions leave an emotional impact bigger than any viral social media hashtag could.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about what kind of story filmmakers wanted to tell about Richard Russell—a cautionary tale, a character study, or something else? Do you think this film leans more toward making Russell appear more sympathetic or more responsible? Why?
How did the use of the real audio recordings affect how believable or emotional the story felt?
Why do you think some real-life events become viral or meme-worthy? Do you think that's appropriate? What responsibility do the filmmakers have when telling stories about real-life tragedies?
