Sleeping Princess
What's the Story?
Rosa (Pietra Quintela) is a typical teenager living in a boarding school in Brazil in SLEEPING PRINCESS (Princesa Adormecida). She and her best friend (Lívia Silva) share a life that includes homework, strict nuns running the school, and crushes on boys. For Rosa, the boy in question (Guilherme Cabral) appears out of nowhere in her text feed, and the two quickly bond. Rosa's "three dads"—brothers who adopted her—are very protective of her. When an accident lands her in a coma, she awakes to find out that nothing about her life is what she thought it was.
Is It Any Good?
A hodgepodge of elements and genres are blended together into a fairy tale-inspired story that falls short on cohesiveness, and even shorter on emotion. Sleeping Princess aims for a mix of fear and humor, but neither works. Instead, the film places slightly hysterical characters into peculiar situations, leaving out key pieces of information. The fairy tale is here, but the magic is not.
