Sorry, Baby
What's the Story?
In SORRY, BABY, Agnes (Eva Victor) is a literature professor who, a few years earlier as a graduate student, experienced "a bad thing." Life is moving quickly for her best friend, Lydie (Naomi Ackie), but Agnes, weighed down by her trauma, struggles to progress.
Is It Any Good?
Eva Victor opens their personal wounds to reveal a painfully honest, surprisingly witty deconstruction of the emotional impact of rape. Victor has shared that the events portrayed in Sorry, Baby are similar to their own lived experience, and their catharsis is viewers' touchstone. Survivors of sexual violence may want to approach the movie with caution, but the straightforward storytelling approach—paired with Agnes' quirky, blunt sense of humor—may also help these viewers feel seen and understood.
While watching, it's hard not to wonder—if not desperately hope—that Sorry, Baby could possibly help prevent an assault. If even one potential victim realizes that they're entering a possibly dangerous situation and leaves before it goes awry, or if even one potential rapist identifies that their object of interest isn't being "coy" but is politely indicating a lack of interest, it's worth the watch.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about how Sorry, Baby creates understanding, compassion, and empathy for survivors of assault. How can humor be used as a tool—here and in other movies—to keep audiences engaged with subject matter they might otherwise prefer to avoid?
What is abuse of power, and why is it a crime? How does it lead to "the bad thing" that happens to Agnes? Why do you think she felt she couldn't leave?
What does Lydie do to be a supportive friend and help Agnes through her traumatic experience? Why is it important for someone in crisis to know they have someone they can call, talk to, or rely on?
Discuss how Agnes' thesis is used as a metaphor. When Agnes is teaching the book Lolita and a student expresses disgust, she raises a "form" versus "content" question. What does this mean, and what other examples of art or entertainment would you say this applies to?
How can art be used to heal?
