Soul on Fire
What's the Story?
Inspired by a true story, SOUL ON FIRE follows John O'Leary (played by Joel Courtney as an adult), who is extensively burned in a horrific fire at age 9. Given a less than 1% chance of making it, John defies the odds and—some would say miraculously—survives, thanks in part to the support of his faith, family, friends, and the community. Ultimately, though, he must learn what it means to rise above the ashes and live the life he's been given, without letting one tragic moment define him.
Is It Any Good?
If this fact-based film wasn't so heavy on the beer product placement, it might have risen above its clichés thanks to its inspiring "miraculous underdog" heart. But, unfortunately, Soul on Fire's strong faith-based messaging and "rise from the ashes" journey feels partially eclipsed by all of the Budweiser on display, which sends viewers a mixed message: Yes, you need to find a life worth living, but should any part of that identity be found at the bottom of a beer bottle?
That said, if you can look past that element, you might learn a thing or two about fire safety, burn treatment, faith, family love, and being a supportive person in a time of need. And co-stars John Corbett and William H. Macy do turn in heartfelt performances, even if they're somewhat overshadowed by Courtney's showier moments as the flawed (and often drunk) O'Leary.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the appeal of "based on a true story" films like Soul on Fire. Did you find John O'Leary's story inspirational? Why, or why not? Do you think your answer would be the same if he wasn't a real person?
Where do you find strength when your "fire" seems dim? What helps you when things feel impossible?
What role do courage and resilience play during times of struggle? John's father talks about "saying yes to life and living that yes." What does "living that yes" mean to you?
