What's the Story?
Amid the many stresses of their busy lives, longtime friends Jane (Leslie Mann), Coco (Michelle Buteau), and Sophie (Anna Faris) finally manage to get away for a peaceful birthday SPA WEEKEND in Palm Springs. But when their trainwreck friend Mel (Isla Fisher) crashes the party, their girls' retreat becomes anything but relaxing.
Is It Any Good?
Writing-directing duo Jon Lucas and Scott Moore—of Bad Moms fame—don't quite manage to reinvigorate the "girls gone wild" comedy genre here, sticking to predictably raunchy humor. Yes, Spa Weekend has a luxury getaway twist, but the messages about self-care not being selfish, the need to prioritize yourself, and the importance of solidifying your friendships are underdeveloped. Instead, the film panders to middle-aged women with a formulaic story and a formulaic YOLO fist bump. And the friend group, while played by appealing actors, feels more typecast than relatable, with awkward moments and uneven comedic timing. Still, if you're a fan of Lucas and Moore's previous work, this "everything goes wrong" comedy might do as a light popcorn flick with occasional laughs.
