What's the Story?

Based on a true story, STOLEN GIRL follows the eight-year journey of single mom Maureen (Kate Beckinsale). She's desperate to rescue her daughter, who was abducted by her father and taken overseas to the Middle East. She teams up with Robeson (Scott Eastwood), an ex-Marine mercenary, to bring her home. But espionage, betrayal, and covert operations make their task more difficult—and potentially deadly. With time running out, Maureen's motherly love is put to the ultimate test. Just how far is she willing to go?

A strong mom's heroic story is dulled by weak execution in this fact-based thriller. Stolen Girl's gripping based-on-a-true-story plot and emotional hook build a solid foundation for Beckinsale's honest performance. And parents who watch the film may find themselves particularly moved by the end twist.

But, unfortunately, the movie's desperate mom is overshadowed by director James Kent's desperate reaching. While the idea of a mother's love being channeled to rescue her child is compelling, the action movie clichés, the over-the-top acting by the supporting cast, and the stereotypical portrayals of international espionage, government, and the Middle East all fall short of contemporary expectations. Sadly, the movie's earnest and sincere call to action around overseas abductions might go unheard due to the lack of conviction in the film's execution.
