What's the Story?
In STOWAWAY, Bella (Ruby Rose) must battle to survive when a group of thieves try to commandeer her luxury yacht.
Is It Any Good?
This nautical thriller barely manages to stay afloat. Stowaway's biggest problem is a plot that moves more like a trawler than a speedboat. As the unlikely heir to a luxury yacht, Rose does her best to give lone wolf Bella an attitude formed by a traumatic past. But her ability to miraculously develop whatever skills she needs to survive is far-fetched at best. Meanwhile the group of pirates who commandeer the yacht frequently describe the action and repeat their plan back to each other for the audience's benefit.
Thankfully there remains a hint of mystery about who these villains are and where they've come from. This keeps things watchable, at least until the story blurts out an unconvincing final act 20 minutes before the end. There are a couple of well-lit set pieces, where Bella sees the walls closing in around her. But elsewhere the camera seems to wobble with seasickness. Sadly Stowaway offers nothing new and is a thriller destined to get lost at sea.
