What's the Story?

As STUCK WITH YOU begins, Gaël (Kev Adams) is on his way home to be with his girlfriend at a New Year's Eve party when the elevator in his apartment building stops between floors. He's stuck in there with a no-nonsense woman about his age, Hannah (Camille Lellouche). Initially rebuffing his attempts at conversation in an effort to get the elevator running again, Hannah slowly warms to Gaël and the two reveal aspects of their lives to each other over the course of their time stuck in a small space together.

Getting stuck in an elevator with a stranger can't be fun; getting stuck in a film with two strangers stuck in an elevator could be -- but in this case, it's not. Stuck with You (the translated title of the punnier original, Happy Nous Year) relies on gender clichés, lowbrow humor, and two uninteresting millennials facing childhood traumas and the challenges of adult relationships. The saving grace is the film's short running time (just under an hour) and its predictable but still satisfying happy ending. Take the stairs.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about the premise of getting to know someone while stuck in an elevator, as in Stuck with You. How would you react if you were stuck in an elevator?

  • The film uses reenactments to show the characters stepping into past memories and watching events from the past unfold. What did you think of this narrative technique?

  • What other films have you watched that take place in a single setting like this one?
