Suga: Road to D-Day
What's the Story?
About to turn 30 and pulling together pieces for his next solo album, boy band BTS member Suga takes a trip to locations in the US, Japan, and Korea in 2021-2022 to find inspiration for his work under the moniker Agust D in SUGA: ROAD TO D-DAY. Along the way, he meets some of his musical idols and collaborates with many of them. He looks for ideas and messages to incorporate into his music. He talks about feeling a little lost, creatively and existentially, and he admits he thinks about quitting sometimes. He speaks frankly to the camera about his work, and we see videos of his new songs.
Is It Any Good?
Here's an example of a feature-length documentary that really could have been a short film -- or better yet, a music docu of just the songs from the new album. That's because the music in Suga: Road to D-Day is much more exciting than the travelogue. Fans will appreciate the glimpse into the artist's creative process and inspiration, but Suga seems to be in a rut here. He complains that he doesn't know what his message is anymore, he's not sure what he has left to say or dream about as he faces his 30th birthday, and he's even thought of quitting. This doesn't make for rousing material for a movie. We actually watch him doze off at one point, and we hear him joke that making music is like "pushing out excrement." There is a touching scene when he meets his idol, Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto (The Last Emperor), and the two play music for each other. Sakamoto passed away last month.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about why so many musicians star in documentaries about themselves, like Suga in Suga: Road to D-Day. Why do fans enjoy watching their favorite musicians on screen? Who have you or would you enjoy seeing a documentary about?
In the film, Suga travels around the US and meets other musicians. What are some lessons he takes away from the traveling, which he says he hasn't done much of outside of work?
Suga admits BTS received a lot of hate as a boy band. Did this surprise you? How does he deal with it?
What would you say are the central messages of his new album?
