Parents' Guide to Sugar

Parents need to know that Sugar is a sports drama/immigrant story that follows the journey of 19-year-old Dominican Miguel "Sugar" Santos, who pursues his dream of becoming a famous pitcher when he's drafted to a single-A team in Bridgetown, Iowa. Characters have sex, kiss, hug, flirt, sexy dance, and make sexual hand signals. Some brief nudity and blurred nudity is shown. Innuendo includes verbal mentions of ""c--ksucker," "t-tties," and "skinny dipping." Infrequent strong language includes "f--k," "s--t," "bulls--t," "a--hole," "d--khead," "godammit," "damn," "hell," "pr--k," "suck," "shut up," "my God," and "oh my God." Drinking and brief drug use (ingesting pills). A few ethnic stereotypes, segregation, and on-screen racism are portrayed, including verbal slurs of "all Dominicans look the same," "Puerto Rican piece of s--t," "he's Black like you," "Whites only," "we don't serve colored people," and "we don't serve Blacks." Implied White supremacy and some immigrant tropes (i.e. Miguel hired as a dishwasher) are used throughout. The film presents a strong message that true success isn't found through achievement or fame, but by staying true to yourself, finding purpose, adapting to new environments, growing through adversity, and discovering hope in new beginnings.
