What's the Story?

In SUNNY DANCER, Ivy (Bella Ramsey) is a teenager in remission from cancer who, after much resistance, is convinced by her parents to attend a summer camp for other young people who've been through a similar journey. Under the watch of camp leader Patrick (Neil Patrick Harris), Ivy eventually puts her cynicism aside, inspired by her new roommate Ella (Ruby Stokes) to open herself up to new friendships and possibilities.

Making a comedy about cancer is no easy task. Yet with Sunny Dancer, writer and director George Jaques has managed to make a film that is touching, tender, and deeply moving, but also funny. At times the movie falls into the conventional clichés so often found in the coming-of-age genre, but it's also punctuated with emotional and impactful moments, notably a scene involving Harris as camp leader Patrick. But it's Ramsey who leads the film—her initial cynicism giving way to an embrace of all that the camp is trying to do, remaining believable if unsurprising. The movie's gentle spirit should speak to young people impacted by cancer, serving as a strong reminder that those who've been through such a difficult illness are not defined by it.
