Superworm
What's the Story?
SUPERWORM tells the story of an exceptionally strong worm. Superworm (voiced by Matt Smith) loves to entertain his fellow bugs and insects. He's also always on hand to help them when they're in need. But when Superworm is kidnapped by the greedy Wizard Lizard (Kobna Holdbrook-Smith) and his servant, Crow (Rob Brydon), and forced to dig for treasure, it's up to Superworm's friends to come and save the day.
Is It Any Good?
Another adaptation from much-loved kids' author Julia Donaldson, this 25-minute animated adventure hits all the right notes without feeling especially new. The ninth of Donaldson's books to be brought to screen by production company Magic Light Pictures, Superworm could only ever be as good as its source material. And the truth is, the story is just not as strong as the likes of The Gruffalo, Room on the Broom, and Zog. That's not to say it's bad. As can be expected from Donaldson's stories, there are plenty of positive takeaways to be had; the importance of community, helping others, and standing up to bullies. The animation is also beautifully shot, while the voice cast includes a narration by Oscar-winner Olivia Colman. But when held up to its predecessors, the older guard shine brighter.
